His Girl Friday - Film Review

 ★1/2 - 4 1/2 Stars

Howard Hawks is widely considered to be the king of screwball comedy. Hawks' other film, "Bringing Up Baby" (which also features Cary Grant) is also a screwball comedy. This film features Cary Grant as Walter Burns alongside Rosalind Russell as Hildy Johnson. The premise of the story is that Grant's character, Walter, is trying to win back his ex-wife as she has announced that she is re-marrying. Walter tries to seduce Bruce Baldwin, the fiance of Hildy, to get himself arrested and commit illegal acts. While intertwining in this story is the scramble of newspaper writers and editors who are trying to get the scoop of the hanging of Earl Williams who is accused of murdering an African-American police officer.
The story gets chaotic as Williams escapes from prison and shows up in the press room, equipped with a gun. His love interest, Molly Malone, shows up in the press room and is happy and upset to see Williams at the same time. As police are coming into the room, Molly jumps out of the window. The rest of the film, well... you'll have to see from there.
The movie is good. The movie is funny, suspenseful, and chaotic. The only lacking part of the movie, I find, is the speed of the dialogue. Sometimes the characters can be very difficult to understand so I recommend the use of subtitles. Other than that, I definitely recommend you watch this film. The comedy is genius and the thrill is real. A timeless comedy at its best.
